✨ Abuela, Ecuador & the Chocolate Factory
I recently learned something that made my chocolate journey even sweeter—my abuela worked in a chocolate factory in Ecuador when she was younger.
It felt like a full-circle moment. I’ve always loved making chocolate, even starting out by mixing cocoa powder, butter, and sugar from scratch—no shortcuts, just pure ingredients. Now I realize I’ve been carrying her legacy without even knowing it.

🌱 Ecuador: The Original Home of Cacao
Did you know Ecuador has one of the richest cacao histories in the world?
- Archaeologists found cacao traces in pottery dating back 5,300 years at the Santa Ana-La Florida site in southern Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe). This makes it one of the earliest cradles of chocolate. (Science.org)
- Ecuador’s Nacional (Arriba Nacional) cacao is famous worldwide for its fine flavor, often called the “Champagne of cacao.” (Conexion Chocolate)
- By the late 1800s, Ecuador was the world’s largest cacao exporter before plant disease slowed production. Still, it remains a leader in fine flavor cacao today. (Southern Explorations)

🍫 From Scratch: My First Chocolate Bars
When I started making chocolate, I didn’t just melt chips—I went back to the basics. I blended cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and sweetener until bars took shape.
It wasn’t just about taste. It was about ritual, about honoring hands that worked the land, and unknowingly, about honoring my abuela’s path.
Every time I pour chocolate into a mold, I feel like I’m adding another link in the chain—from Ecuador’s ancient cacao keepers, to abuela’s factory, to my kitchen today.
💎 Why Heritage Matters in Chocolate
Chocolate isn’t just dessert—it’s history, craft, and family.
- Flavor: Nacional cacao’s floral, earthy notes are unmatched.
- Connection: Every bite honors farmers, traditions, and ancestors.
- Integrity: Making bars from scratch respects the roots of chocolate.
