My Chocolate, My Ancestors: How Abuela & Ecuador Shaped My Love for Chocolate

Discover how my love of chocolate connects back to my abuela’s days working in a factory in Ecuador, the original home of cacao. Learn about Ecuador’s cacao history, my journey of making bars from scratch, and shop my handcrafted chocolate bars inspired by heritage.

✨ Abuela, Ecuador & the Chocolate Factory

I recently learned something that made my chocolate journey even sweeter—my abuela worked in a chocolate factory in Ecuador when she was younger.

It felt like a full-circle moment. I’ve always loved making chocolate, even starting out by mixing cocoa powder, butter, and sugar from scratch—no shortcuts, just pure ingredients. Now I realize I’ve been carrying her legacy without even knowing it.

🌱 Ecuador: The Original Home of Cacao

Did you know Ecuador has one of the richest cacao histories in the world?

  • Archaeologists found cacao traces in pottery dating back 5,300 years at the Santa Ana-La Florida site in southern Ecuador (Zamora-Chinchipe). This makes it one of the earliest cradles of chocolate. (Science.org)
  • Ecuador’s Nacional (Arriba Nacional) cacao is famous worldwide for its fine flavor, often called the “Champagne of cacao.” (Conexion Chocolate)
  • By the late 1800s, Ecuador was the world’s largest cacao exporter before plant disease slowed production. Still, it remains a leader in fine flavor cacao today. (Southern Explorations)

🍫 From Scratch: My First Chocolate Bars

When I started making chocolate, I didn’t just melt chips—I went back to the basics. I blended cocoa powder, cocoa butter, and sweetener until bars took shape.

It wasn’t just about taste. It was about ritual, about honoring hands that worked the land, and unknowingly, about honoring my abuela’s path.

Every time I pour chocolate into a mold, I feel like I’m adding another link in the chain—from Ecuador’s ancient cacao keepers, to abuela’s factory, to my kitchen today.

💎 Why Heritage Matters in Chocolate

Chocolate isn’t just dessert—it’s history, craft, and family.

  • Flavor: Nacional cacao’s floral, earthy notes are unmatched.
  • Connection: Every bite honors farmers, traditions, and ancestors.
  • Integrity: Making bars from scratch respects the roots of chocolate.

❤️ My Heritage Chocolate Bar Collection

To honor this legacy, I’ve created my own handcrafted chocolate bar collection, inspired by Ecuador’s cacao story and my abuela’s hands.

Each set includes:
✨ Three small-batch bars made with cocoa powder & butter
✨ Flavors designed with love and intentional energy
✨ A nod to Ecuador’s ancestral cacao heritage

  • Weekend recap 🌿💎✨

Two events. Two cities. So many familiar faces, new connections, good vibes, and lots of love. 🥹💕

From HiGirl Market in DC to District Cnbs Midsummer Night Event in Baltimore, this weekend was all about community, creativity, culture, and cnbs. 🍃💨

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, showed love, and supported Sweeder. 💨🫶🏽

Another weekend doing what I love. See y’all at the next one ✨
  • The community. The culture. And of course, the cnbs. 🌿✨💨

Still feeling all the love from our latest event with District Cnbs at the Baltimore Museum of Industry 🥹💚

This is what it’s all about for me. Seeing familiar faces, meeting new ones, catching up with people I’ve met throughout this journey, and watching our cnbs community continue to grow right in front of us.

There’s something really special about being in a room full of people who genuinely love the plant, the culture, and the people behind it. Good conversations, good energy, creativity, connection… all of it. 💎🌿

Huge thank you to @districtcnbs for putting together such an amazing event and continuing to create spaces where this community can come together. And thank YOU to everyone who stopped by the Sweeder table, showed love, made something, shopped, said hi, or simply shared a moment with me. 🤍

Grateful to be here. Grateful to be growing. And grateful to be part of this community.

See y’all at the next one. 💨✨
  • HiGirl Market recap 🎀🌿✨

What a DAYYY 🥹💖 Such an amazing turnout, the sweetest vendors, and such a beautiful community at @higirldc.

One of my favorite parts of doing these markets is honestly just talking to people. Catching up with the ones who already know exactly what a Sweeder clip is 😂💨 and then watching someone new discover the magic for the first time.

Because yes, she’s cute… but she’s multifunctional too 💎✨ Our crystal clips can be part of your cannabis sesh, but they can also be used during your rituals for burning sage, incense, herbs, and cleansing your space. Pretty AND purposeful is always the assignment. 🧿🌿

I also loved meeting so many other friendly vendors and making new connections. That’s really what community events are about to me. We can sell our products, yes, but we can also make friends, exchange ideas, support each other, and leave knowing a few more people than we did when we walked in. 🤍

And shoutout to Central Station in Adams Morgan because what a venue 😍✨ My first time there and the whole aesthetic felt so DC. The atmosphere, the design, the energy… such a perfect backdrop for the market.

Already looking forward to the next one. 💕 Follow @higirldc and stay tuned because you already know we’ll be popping up again.

  • POV: you finally got your nails done 💅

And you’re not about to ruin them during the sesh.💨

That’s why I started making Sweeder clips.🤭

They hold your sesh so your nails stay fresh and your fingers stay protected.

And because they’re crystal and copper, they double as a ritual tool for sage and incense.🧘🏻‍♀️🧘🏽‍♂️🧘

Fresh nails every sesh.💅🏽

Bonus✨I hand make every clip 🤭

Comment CLIP if you want the link.

Save this for your next sesh 💅
